English Transition Work

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Our first unit of study at Nobel is Greek Mythology. Not only did the Greeks create Myths to explain natural phenomena, they also loved to share stories about brave heroes and their great adventures. Heroes such as: Heracles (Hercules to the Romans), Perseus, Odysseus and Achilles, but to name a few.

With the theme of heroism in mind, we would like you to prepare for your time at Nobel by reading (and listening) to our Year 6 transition text: ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’ by Cressida Cowell. The novel is about an unlikely Viking hero, tossed into dragon-fighting school and tasked with the burden of proving himself as a mighty warrior. In addition to the novel, we will also set extracts from non-fiction sources and more classical texts to compliment your reading.

Each week, we will ask you to complete a chapter from your set text and then to answer comprehension activities on what you have read. We will also set additional activities that will introduce you to some of the key aspects central to studying English at Secondary level. For example:

• Social and historical context
• Characterisation
• Setting
• Themes and Motifs
• Structure
• Language
• Genre
• Critical Readings
• Narrative

We look forward to welcoming you to our school and to hearing about all of the other stories and texts you have read over the summer. We recognise that children who develop good reading habits: improve their literacy skills, find it easier to access all subjects and generally have better life outcomes. Moreover, as well as the numerous academic benefits gained from regular reading, enjoying a book can also prove to be a great form of escapism and stress-relief. Maths Transition Work

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are pleased to be able to offer you a variety of mathematics resources that will help you to learn and revise so you are prepared as much as possible for the years ahead.

Each fortnight we have prepared and adapted some resources for you to read through in a PowerPoint followed by some questions for you to try by yourselves. We have given you the answers as well so you can see how you get on afterwards and try to figure out where you might have gone wrong if you made a mistake. If you really struggle the internet is a great place to look for help and we love the videos on Maths Genie to help you to learn a topic quickly and easily.

The topics we have picked are mainly around fractions, decimals and percentages, great fun to do but also useful in life and something that we often have to use. Also if you are good at these then you will be able to show us next year when we cover that topic and impress us with your knowledge.

We look forward to meeting you in September and getting back to learning in a traditional environment. I hope to be able to share a love of mathematics with you and if you are not a fan yet then maybe you will start to thrive more in this new environment. Remember to keep up with your numeracy and play maths games during the summer so you are ready to go when we start back.
