English Transition Work

Dear Parents/Guardians, Our first unit of study at Nobel is Greek Mythology. Not only did the Greeks create Myths to explain natural phenomena, they also loved to share stories about brave heroes and their great adventures. Heroes such as: Heracles (Hercules to the Romans), Perseus, Odysseus and Achilles, but to name a few. With the theme of heroism in mind, we would like you to prepare for your time at Nobel by reading (and listening) to our Year 6 transition text: ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’ by Cressida Cowell. The novel is about an unlikely Viking hero, tossed into dragon-fighting school and tasked with the burden of proving himself as a mighty warrior. In addition to the novel, we will also set extracts from non-fiction sources and more classical texts to compliment your reading. Each week, we will ask you to complete a chapter from your set text and then to answer comprehension activities on what you have read. We will also set additional activities that will introduce you to some of the key aspects central to studying English at Secondary level. For example:
  • Social and historical context
  • Characterisation
  • Setting
  • Themes and Motifs
  • Structure
  • Language
  • Genre
  • Critical Readings
  • Narrative
We look forward to welcoming you to our school and to hearing about all of the other stories and texts you have read over the summer. We recognise that children who develop good reading habits: improve their literacy skills, find it easier to access all subjects and generally have better life outcomes. Moreover, as well as the numerous academic benefits gained from regular reading, enjoying a book can also prove to be a great form of escapism and stress-relief. You can find more information about reading for pleasure on our school website. Yours Faithfully, Ms J Port [ut_one_third]

Maths Transition Work

Dear Parents/Guardians, We are pleased to be able to offer you a variety of mathematics resources that will help you to learn and revise so you are prepared as much as possible for the years ahead. Each fortnight we have prepared and adapted some resources for you to read through in a PowerPoint followed by some questions for you to try by yourselves. We have given you the answers as well so you can see how you get on afterwards and try to figure out where you might have gone wrong if you made a mistake. If you really struggle the internet is a great place to look for help and we love the videos on Maths Genie to help you to learn a topic quickly and easily. The topics we have picked are mainly around fractions, decimals and percentages, great fun to do but also useful in life and something that we often have to use. Also if you are good at these then you will be able to show us next year when we cover that topic and impress us with your knowledge. We look forward to meeting you in September and getting back to learning in a traditional environment. I hope to be able to share a love of mathematics with you and if you are not a fan yet then maybe you will start to thrive more in this new environment. Remember to keep up with your numeracy and play maths games during the summer so you are ready to go when we start back. Yours Faithfully, Mr A Mesher [ut_one_fourth]

In a bid to promote and celebrate students efforts of exercising and staying active during the lockdown period we are asking students and families to upload a 'HealtySeflie' of themselves working out. This could be from the tasks set by the PE department, or an activity the family may be completing, eg a bike ride. We want to celebrate as many students and families keeping active over this period. To upload your 'HealthySelfies' on your post tweet @NobelSchoolPE and use the #HealthySelfie We look forward to seeing lots of your tweets. Also keep an eye out for staff photos also!

During such extraordinary times we recognise the challenges many parents are facing balancing work commitments alongside trying to support children at home. Our priority during this time needs to be keeping our children and ourselves well. It is easy during such uncertain times for both children and adults to become overwhelmed and we all need to be encouraged to look after each other. We understand these challenges are not straight forward but taking care of your mind as well as your body is very important. If the news surrounding the coronavirus is affecting your mental health, then we have put together a list of various resources that may be useful:

Mental Health Awareness Week

Let us continue to encourage our valued students to not only maintain an academic focus but equally acknowledge the psychological impact this ongoing situation has on us all. If you need further support, then please do not hesitate to get in touch. When working from home it is very important to take care of our emotional wellbeing and mental health. The NHS promotes the 5 Ways to Wellbeing and these are: Connect: Spend time talking with family and friends. Be active: Try and take regular exercise to keep you physically healthy. This makes you feel good by changing chemicals in the brain and changing your mood. Move around for five or ten minutes every hour, just like if you were moving from one lesson to another in school, aiming for frequent, short breaks. Avoid sitting on unsupported chairs such as sofas for long periods. Keep learning: Make a routine for working at home. Follow a normal school day as closely possible. Take notice/Be mindful: Take regular short breaks and be mindful of how you feel. Relax and look around you or listen to music, take a few deep breaths. Avoid use phones, tablets and gaming devices for long periods of time. Give: Just as you would do in school, do something for a friend or relation/adult such as sending a positive message, or offering to help them online. As well as making them feel good, it can make you feel good too!

Social Distancing

[ut_two_thirds] Everyone must stay at home to help stop the spread of coronavirus. You should only leave your home for very limited purposes:
  • shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible
  • one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household
  • any medical need, including to donate blood, avoid or escape risk of injury or harm, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person
  • travelling for work purposes, but only where you cannot work from home

[ut_icon icon="fa-exclamation" size="fa-lg" border="none" align="alignnone" color="#ffffff"] Important These reasons are exceptions – even when doing these activities, you should be minimising time spent outside of the home and ensuring you are 2 metres apart from anyone outside of your household.

Easter Holidays Update

Dear Parents, carers and Nobelians, As you know tomorrow we would have finished at lunch time ready for the start of the Easter holidays. Even though so much has changed in the last couple of weeks, we still want you all to enjoy a break over Easter and so no classwork will be set from Monday 7 April to Friday 17 April. Normal lesson work will be set again from Monday 20 April. Whilst the holidays would normally be a time for going out, seeing friends and enjoying (hopefully) some better Spring weather, we do appreciate that the next two weeks may well be quite a challenge for families who have to balance parents working from home, children cooped up in the house and the threat of boredom. Therefore we have created a booklet of fun optional activities that you can dip into as much or as little as you want in order to help you enjoy your time off. The booklet can be accessed from the link to the right on this page (scroll down on a mobile device). Some activities ask you to refer to more detailed instructions which will be posted on Show My Homework from Monday, just because the files are too big to go into the booklet, but please remember that these are optional activities, not part of your regular curriculum. We hope that everyone is able to enjoy some family time over the Easter break and that you all stay well and keep safe. Naomi Rose Deputy headteacher

Update From The Headteacher 31/03/2020

Dear parents, carers and Nobelians, I think we would all agree that these are very challenging times. I pay tribute to all of you who are still going to work keeping our essential services going including our wonderful staff, many of whom supervise vulnerable students and those whose parents are engaged in essential work. Our whole school community has responded in typical Nobelian style and we should like to pay tribute to all our staff who continue to support all our students by setting work and giving regular feedback. Our year heads and senior staff can still be contacted in the usual way. Obviously there are doctors and nurses doing really valiant work, but our school contributes to the national emergency in a smaller but albeit significant way. We ask that you continue to encourage all our students to complete set work, it’s vital they don’t fall behind in their studies. Take care and stay safe Martyn Henson Headteacher The Nobel School [/ut_three_fourths] [ut_one_fourth_last]

Wednesday 18 March

We currently have 21 teachers absent, this means that tomorrow we can provide a normal timetable for yr.7, Yr.9, Yr. 10, Yr.11 and Yr13. Year 8 and Year 12 will need to work at home tomorrow Thursday 19 March. Work will be set for all their lessons in show my homework. Thank you for your help and understanding at this difficult time, there will be another update tomorrow morning.
Dear Parents / Guardians, Unfortunately, due to the government guidance to reduce social contact to avoid the spread of the Covid-19 virus, we have taken the decision to suspend all instrumental lessons from Wednesday 18 March 2020. This is a precautionary measure that we think is the right decision in the current climate. We have informed the music centre about the lessons, and I will be meeting with Christina Luchies to discuss any money that has already been paid. As soon as we have information about this, and about lessons restarting we will contact parents individually with dates and times. If you have any further questions about this or anything else music related, please contact me at Andrew.Hardy@nobel.herts.sch.uk . Kind regards, Mr Hardy Head of Performance

Tuesday 17 March

Dear parents / carers, Unfortunately we have 30 staff who are unable to come to school tomorrow following advice from the Government. We therefore will have to have a partial closure and to help with this we would like year 9 students to stay at home tomorrow, Wednesday 18 March, but as it stands we would like to them to come to school on Thursday. Year 10 students will be sent home after lunch tomorrow. Work will be set for them on Show My Homework. Please keep monitoring your emails and the website for further information. The Nobel School
